Admissions Policy

BARROW HALL COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL

ADMISSION POLICY

AIMS

To provide clear objective criteria for admissions,  to comply with Local Authority guidelines, and to seek to ensure that parents and the school liaise together for the benefit of the children.

To ensure that if there are not enough places at the school in  particular year groups, that the school is consistent in dealing with parents who express a preference for Barrow Hall Primary School .   Applications will be referred to the Education and Lifelong Learning Department for further consideration.

CRITERIA

Barrow Hall Primary School has an admission number of 75.   The amalgamated Primary School is designated as a three form entry school.

Children will be admitted in line with Warrington Local Education Authority policy.

Children aged 5 between 1 September and 31 August will be admitted to a Reception class in September.   All eligible children will be brought in full-time from the end of  September.

If more than 75 applications are received priority will be as follows:

·        Pupils with elder siblings who attend the school and expected to continue at this school in the following school year.

·        Pupils with a recognised medical or psychological condition.

·        Pupils living nearest to the school defined ?as the crow flies? from the front door of the child?s permanent place of residence to the main entrance of the school.

Where the planned admission limit is exceeded within one of the categories listed above, pupils will be admitted according to those with permanent place of residence being closest to the school.

If the number of parents applying for places in a year group exceeds 75, and that application is rejected parents will be invited to put their child's name on the waiting list.   Parents, who are not allocated a place, will have the right to appeal to the Local Authority.

On the application form for a place parents must name more than one school.  If you do not name another school it does not mean you have more chance of getting in at Barrow Hall.

The school will write to all parents who have been offered a place.

The school expects all factual information to be correct and cannot accept addresses of childminders or grandparents.

The Governors do not wish any class in the school to have more than 30 pupils, as they believe large classes are likely to result in less effective education for the children.  In the Infant department no class will exceed 30 pupils in line with Government guidelines.

PROCEDURES FOR ADMISSION

Parents considering enrolling their children are welcome to visit the school at any mutually convenient time.  Appointments may be made by telephone, letter or by calling in at school.

New pupils who are accepted by WBC Admissions Team for admission at 4+ will be invited to a number of afternoon sessions in the term before full time school begins.  We may, due to numbers involved, stagger the intake of children who start school in September.  Parents and children are invited to ?Drop-In? sessions where an informal meeting between teachers parents and pupils occcurs.  Information for parents is always available.  Parents will be invited to a meting with the Headteacher, Deputy, School Health Adviser and Chair of Governors where they will be given a formal introduction to the school and will be issued with all relevant documentation.

The school welcomes a number of older children over the course of the year, keeping to the admission limit of 75 per year group, and our admission procedures are amended accordingly.

All parents are invited to meet the class teacher during the first term in school.

Transfer between schools

Parents are entitled to transfer their children to alternative schools during the year. They should ensure that this is in the child?s best interests.  Af a year group is oversubscribed  parents will need to make an appeal to the LEA to ascertain as to whether a place in this school is available.

Information regarding Admissions

The school publishes information relating to admissions in its Prospectus.   The issues relating to admission are: secondary education transfer, school meals, uniform, the curriculum, discipline, charging, Special Educational Needs, access to records, annual governors? report, parent governors, school holiday calendar and personal property.
