Technology ( D & T )

The school aims in teaching design and technology are that all children will develop their problem solving skills and their capabilities in this subject by:

• Improving design skills
• Improving production, manufacturing and building skills
• Improving their knowledge and understanding of materials and components
• Improving their knowledge and understanding of control systems
• Improving their knowledge and understanding of what is considered quality
• Increasing relevant vocabulary
• Being aware of health and safety issues
  

The emphasis in our teaching of design and technology is on first hand experience and we encourage children increasingly to take control of their learning.  Thus:

• Investigative work is common
• Children are encouraged to draw on their experiences when generating ideas
• Children are encouraged to used labelled sketches to explain designs, aiding reflection and evaluation
• Children are asked to plan ahead, thinking about the stages needed to produce their design
• Children are urged to select from a range of materials, tools and techniques
• Children are invited to evaluate their products
