Science

At Barrow Hall, Science is taught on a weekly basis at both key stages and covers a variety of topics and concepts. The units of work the children follow are all taught in accordance with the Science National Curriculum Programme of Study.

We believe that science teaching should offer opportunities for children to:

  • develop knowledge and understanding of important scientific ideas, processes and skills and relate these to everyday experiences
  • learn about ways of thinking and finding out about and communicating ideas
  • explore values and attitudes through science

The Science units fall broadly into 4 main teaching areas: scientific enquiry, life processes and living things, materials and their properties & physical processes.

Almost every unit that is taught in school finishes with some form of investigative study, for example Habitats (Unit 4B in Year 4) culminates with an investigation into the habitats preferred by woodlice!

Children get the chance to experience at least one example from each teaching area per year.

At school we look at many different ways of making the teaching of Science an interesting and enjoyable learning experience and we try, wherever possible, to involve outside agencies, i.e. BNFL, United Utilities, GSHS and many more. This year school is also proud to be part of the nationwide 'Children Challenging Industry' programme, of which you will hear more about in the future.

If you have any questions regarding the teaching of Science, please do not hesitate to contact your child's class teacher of myself.
