R.E.

"The Warrington Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education" was introduced for the academic year 2005/2006. It has run successfully for a year and will be followed again this year.

It has been written to reflect the increased interest in personalised learning in Warrington schools and is a local rather than a national syllabus. This syllabus includes a progressive programme that runs from Reception through to High School.

The following is a brief list of topics that will be covered by each year group:

  • Reception ~ Focus mainly, though not exclusively, on special people, places, objects and events within Christianity.
  • Years 1 & 2 ~ Consider special people, teachings, celebrations, creation, symbolism, friendships and music within Christianity and Hinduism.
  • Years 3 & 4 ~ Focus on some of the beliefs, actions, places of worship, leaders, rules and responsibilities, sacred places, signs and symbols and personal faith of Christianity, Judaism and Islam.
  • Years 5 & 6 ~ Look at caring for the environment, forgiveness, sacred places, religion in the community, sacred texts, Holy journeys, symbolism and inspirational people within Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

In addition, there is also specific guidance for the teaching of R.E throughout the school around Christmas and Easter and for year 6 pupils making the transition from primary to secondary education.

The aim of this syllabus is to ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to succeed whatever their individual needs and to promote pupil's understanding of the role and significance of religion in the modern world and the important beliefs and values that shape it.
