This year we have given each year group a curricular target for mathematics. The target is focused on problem solving. Below is a table of the objectives your child will be covering in problem solving this year.

Foundation

To solve simple problems in the role play areas or in practical situations.

Year 1

To solve one step word problems.

Year 2

To be able to say whether the problem is an addition or subtraction problem and explain how they are going to solve it.

Year 3

To solve real life one step problems using addition and subtraction. To solve real life one step problems using all four operations.

Year 4

To solve real life two step problems using all four operations.

Year 5

To solve real life two step problems using all four operations. To solve real life two step problems using all four operations including a combination of operations.

Year 6

To solve real life two step problems using all four operations including a combination of operations. To choose and justify the use of an appropriate and efficient method for solving problems.

These objectives will be covered each week by your child. If you would like to clarify anything from the table please do not hesitate to talk to your class teacher or Mrs Hawkins.

Many parents have asked about the methods the children are taught for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The following Powerpoint presentations may be of assistance:

                                                                      Addition and Multiplication Methods

                                                                       Subtraction and Division Methods
