Welcome to 4U !

Dear Parents/ Carers and Children,

May I begin by welcoming you to year 5 , I hope you had a fantastic summer break and are feeling refreshed and ready for the new school year ahead. Below you find some information about this term and class routines. However for curriculum support and resources please look on our class and topic sections of the V.L.E. Our new topic for this term is Visiting Vikings, and we  can't wait to start learning about them.

 In the topic we will be learning the following;

·         RE: Pagan beliefs and Christianity

·         PSHE:  Immigration and Migration

          Art: Celtic Art

.         DT ;  Making a Viking Long ship

·         Music :  Viking Sea Shanties

          PE : Invasion games

.         Dance : War Dances

·        Science :  Keeping healthy and  Changing Sounds

ICT : Introducing PowerPoint and UMPC'S

Home Learning  - Home Learning will be based around our topic for this term . There will be a different piece set for each half term; additionally the children will receive math?s bags once every  three to four  weeks.  Also the children will have weekly times table and division facts to learn. Dates for these will be specified when the Homework is given out. However I will advise , that to complete the homework  the best and most enjoyable way is to do some little and often. If you do have any difficulties then please let me know and I will try to help. Copies of the home learning task , as well as additional resources can be found on the VLE.

UMPC :. Once again can you please make sure that your UMPC is FULLY charged at the start of each school day.

VLE:   Pleas visit our class page on the VLE, where you will find lots of information about our class, as well as accessing a range of learning resources and games .

Reading - The children need to read as regularly as possible at home to build upon the skills they have learnt already, however I would ask that at the least the children should read at home at least three times each  week, and then have their reading record signed by an adult to say that this has been done. Children must make sure they have their book in each and every day as there will be opportunities to hear children read. The reading books the children bring home help practice their reading skills and build confidence.  Their reading is then challenged and developed during weekly guided reading sessions.

Spellings - Spellings will usually be send out spellings every Friday ready for a test the following Friday.  Don't forget to use the 'Look, cover, write, check' method to help you learn them.  The children will write their spellings in their book on a Monday, however a copy can also be found on the class page on the VLE.

PE: .  PE kits must be in school on a Monday morning and remain in school until Friday.  This avoids the children not having kit in school and therefore being unable to join in.

Residentia l: We will be going to Colemendy on the 8th November.

Helpers ; If anyone has any spare time or would like to come in and help with displays, hear readers, work on spellings and any other classroom jobs, then please pop in and we can make arrangements, any help big or small is really appreciated and we would love to have you involved.

If you do ever need to speak to me about any issue, please feel free to make an arrangement to come in and see me. As mornings can be very difficult as the children are coming in and it is often very busy so we can not have a proper chat.

Anything else, then just ask and I'll do my best to help!

I look forward to a very successful term.

Kind regards,

Miss Sumner
