Class 3U's web page Autumn Term 2010
A very warm welcome to Year 6 and Class 3U! I hope you all had a great summer holiday and are feeling relaxed and ready for the new school year. I am really looking forward to working with you all in what I am certain is going to be an exciting, challenging and rewarding year.
TOPIC
Our theme for the Autumn term is the
Visiting Vikings
which we will launch on Wednesday 8th September. We will be learning about where the Vikings came from, how they lived and travelled and where they travelled to. We will also learn about how they settled on the Isle of Man and we will see the evidence for ourselves when we visit the beautiful island in October! Don?t worry if you aren't going on the trip - there are still an awful lot of interesting things to learn about a place that is very close to home!
HOME LEARNING
Home Learning projects will be given out each half term. Each project will have a Maths or Literacy and practical focus and for this half term will be linked to our Viking topic. Home Learning tasks will be loaded onto the VLE in the Topic area. (No more excuses for forgetting or losing the homework sheet!). Details of the first project will be issued soon after our return to school.
Additionally, spellings will be given out each Tuesday for a test the following Tuesday. Please make sure you know what each word means and it is also useful to practice writing the word in a sentence.
Times tables will be tested regularly - so you need to practice, practice, practice!
Last but not least, Reading. It is VERY important that you read regularly - at least 3 times a week, ideally every day. Please make sure your reading records are kept up to date and show how often you have read. You can do this yourselves if you want to, you don't have to ask your parents to sign it. Reading records will be collected each Monday morning. You should have your reading book with you in school EVERY day.
PE
Please make sure you bring your PE kit into school on Monday and take it home on a Friday. If you use your PE kit for an after school club, make sure you bring it back into school the next day. If you are unable to take part in a PE lesson, you should bring a note of explanation from home.
SATS
In May you will take tests in Maths and Literacy. In between now and then we will be working hard to make sure that you are well prepared for these tests. As long as you work your hardest, there is no need to worry.
VLE
Each Sunday I update our class homepage with details of what is happening during the next week, so make sure you check it regularly. I also update the STAR PUPIL and STAR WRITER every week - so make sure you show Mum and Dad! There are also lots of useful learning resources in the Year 6 area and topic information in the Year 5 and 6 area.
UMPCs
(You know..those mini laptop things!). These will be given out during the second week back. Please make sure that your UMPC is FULLY charged at the start of each school day and that you carry it to and from school safely and responsibly. Like last year, you will be asked to sign a contract and it is very improtant that you keep to this contract throughout the year.
Parents, I hope you find this information useful. I am sure that the children will settle into their new class and routines quickly. However, if you do have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to come into school and have a chat. The end of the school day is usually the best time to do this.
Many thanks for your continued support.
Mrs. C. Birkett
