Welcome pupils and parents to 1U?s webpage.- AUTUMN 2010
I hope you had a great summer and made the most of the little bit of sunshine we had.
On this page you will find some useful information about our curriculum and notices about our class organization. Please refer to our class page on our VLE site also.
Year 6 is a very important year as it is the final primary school year before the transition to High School. It is highly likely all the year 6 children will be taking SATs in May or June, however this final year is not just about those assessments but about developing potential in all areas. A great deal of hard work will be needed by all to achieve this!
The Curriculum
Most our learning will arise from our creative curriculum topic, with the exception of maths and science.
Our first topic of the year is VIKING VISITORS ?
.This topic is essentially history based as it focuses on the invasion of the Vikings from Scandinavia to our shores and aspects of Viking life. The children will make links to other areas of the primary curriculum as detailed below.
R.E. ? Christianity in Britain
GEOGRAPHY ? Looking at the climate and landscape of Scandinavia. Finding evidence of Viking settlement in Britain today.
PSHCE ? Society and immigration
P.E. - Invasion games and tactics - hockey
ART ? Collage and paper sculpture to create Viking portraits. Designing Celtic patterns
D.T. ? model making Viking long ships
MUSIC ? Sea shanties
SCIENCE - At Barrowhall we follow the QCA scheme of work for science. '
Our VIKING VISITORS topic will be launched during the first week of the new term. At the moment the details are top secret as we are hoping to surprise the children on the day. There is no preparation needed by parents for our topic launch this time.
HOME LEARNING PROJECTS
There will be two home learning projects to complete this term both relating to our creative curriculum topic. Each project will take several weeks to complete and guidance to parents will be included. We strongly encourage parents to work alongside their children on these tasks so that the children benefit from 1 to 1 support.
Details of the first home learning project will be given out in the first weeks back at school.
READING
It is important that your child reads at home on a regular basis to develop their skills and develop good reading habits. We recommend that home reading should take place a minimum of four times per week, but this is dependant on the stage of reading your child is at. More advanced readers need not necessarily read aloud to adults, but require general supervision and opportunity to discuss what they have read. Children at the earlier stages of reading acquisition will need to read aloud to parents at home on a regular basis. Please ensure your child reads at home and completes their reading record. I would appreciate parents signing their child?s reading record once a week. All records will be collected in and checked on Fridays. Key reading skills will be taught in class during the Guided Reading sessions and Literacy lessons.
SPELLING
Weekly spelling lists will be issued on Tuesday to be practiced and learnt for a class test the following Tuesday. Children need to have their book in school on this day to receive the new list. It is useful to use the 'look, say, cover, write, check' method when committing spellings to memory and a sheet will be provided for this exercise.
MULTIPLICATION TABLES
This year I am looking for a big push on tables knowledge so that the children can develop instant recall of multiplication and division facts. We will be revising all sets of tables and will have regular tests of mixed questions. Please can parents maintain regular tables practice at home so that their children can confidently recall facts which will help them enormously in many other areas of the maths curriculum.
Please ensure they have their P. E. kit with them every day
I am sure the children will settle quickly into the class and soon become accustomed to all our daily and weekly routines. We are all really looking forward to our forthcoming trip to the Isle of Man, where we will continue or Viking study and get to know each other better.
Parent meetings are scheduled for the end of October but in the meantime if you have any worries or concerns about your child, don?t hesitate to pop into school at the end of the school day for a chat.
Regards
Mrs S M Roper
