Class 2D at the start of 2010
Welcome back. I hope you all had a smashing Christmas and I wish you all the very best for the new year ahead.
It will be an important new year for all of you with your SATs in May and then waving goodbye to your time in primary school as you enter your high school in September. I will do all I can to help make these two big events as smooth and stress free as possible but if you do have any questions or worries, do come and speak to me.
SATs Preparation
Now Christmas is over we will begin to ease into our preparation for thedreaded SATs. As in previous years we will begin slowly and build up with revision lessons in both Literacy and Numeracy. (At least you don't have Science SATs this year!). Hopefully by now you will have ordered your revision books as these are what we will be using during these lessons. Although May seem a long way off it is important that you keep up to date with the programme and don't fall behind.
It is not all about SATs though and we will continue to do a variety of other lessons too. Below are the details which I hope you find helpful.
Topics
Our topic this term is called "The Future Is Up To You". In it we will begin by looking at what it was like to live in Warrington during the Second World War and contrast this with life today. We will then follow this up by looking at how Warrington has developed since the war and what is planned for the future. Along the way we will look at the role of Warrington Town Council, the Parish Council and the Planning Department. To get us in the mood we will also look at music from the war years (the big band sound, influence of American music and music to support the British troops). To start it all off we will have a talk from people who grew up in Warrington during the war, then have a trip to the Imperial War Museum at Salford Quays and hopefully at some point visit Warrington Council Chambers.
In Science our topics will be Interdependence and Adaptation (QCA 6A) Reversible and Irreversible Changes (6D) and More About Dissolving (QCA 6C). Links to these will be posted here shortly after the start of the term.
As well as the SATs preparation and revision, Numeracy and Literacy will follow National curriculum/strategy programmes.
Homework and Homelearning
Because of the SATs preparation and revision, you will be given weekly Numeracy and Literacy homework and won't have any termly topic based work.
Spellings will continue to be given out on Tuesday for testing on the following Tuesday. Times tables will be tested every Friday.
Reading
- It is important that you continue to read regularly, even though you are in Year 6 and may think you are a good reader. It is not only fun and helpful in learning, but the more you read, the better you will become at writing too. I expect you to complete your Reading Records and hand them in every Monday for checking. (Remember I want to see at least 3 entries per week).
As always correct PE kit should be brought into school every Monday and taken home every Friday. This way you will always have your kit in if we do an impromptu PE lesson.
Parents
If any parents would be willing to come in and help, either on a regular basis or as a one off, or if you feel you could contribute to any of our topic work in any way, then please by all means contact me.
Similarly, if ever you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to get in touch. Your support is essential for your child's progress and the closer we can work together the better it will be for them. This is especially so during the build up to SATs.
Thank you for your continued support.
Mr Mackenzie
