Welcome to 5M –
Miss Mill’s class
Summer Term 2017
Our topic this term is called ‘Man and Machine’. Please look at the Upper Key Stage 2 page for details of what we will be learning in our creative curriculum subjects this term.
This term, we will finish our focus on the un-contacted tribes of the Amazon Rainforest. We have so far produced some thought provoking persuasive letters and are now completing our informative non-chronological reports. Our next focus for English is looking at explanation texts. We will focus our learning around the Wallace and Gromit, ‘Cracking Contraptions’ series of films. Additionally, we undertake weekly focused Grammar, Punctuation, Spelling (GPS) lessons, linking closely to our genre focus.
Maths is taught in differentiated sets across the year group and maths homework will be set by your maths teacher. This term, we will be looking into the topic of shape, space and measure. We are continuing to focus on the application and reasoning of mathematics to everyday life. This is to ensure that the children truly understand the concept of number and shape.
Please ensure that you continue to regularly practice your times tables.
Reading and Planners
We expect everyone to read from their school reading book regularly – a minimum of three times per week. Also, please make sure that you update your planner when you have read. This includes personal texts such as non-fiction and magazines.
We will spend some time at the end of each week reflecting on what you have achieved and setting a new target for the following week. Planners are to be signed for every Monday.
Parents/Guardians – In order to develop your child’s understanding of their reading, it is advised that children are asked questions about their book. In the back of their planners is a list of questions that you can ask your child in order to help develop their comprehension skills.
We will alternate between English and maths homework given out once a week, usually on a Thursday and due in on the following Monday. Spellings and spelling homework will be handed out on a Monday and will be tested/collected on Thursdays. Occasionally, children may be asked to complete a short activity relating to topic work or research a particular topic at home.
PE kits must be in school every day. We are timetabled to undertake our PE lessons on Monday and Thursday however, as you can appreciate, timetables have to be flexible so the days may change. If you wear your PE kit to an after school club, please ensure that you bring it back in the following day. If for any reason you cannot partake in our PE lessons, you are required to bring in a note of explanation from home.
I hope you find this information useful. If you do have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to speak to me in the morning or at the end of the day.
Thank you for your continued support.
