Welcome to Class 4 S –
Mr Shaw’s Class

Summer Term 2017

Welcome back 4S, I hope you’ve all had a lovely Easter break!

Our topic during the summer term is ‘Where the Wild Things Are’.  In their Science lessons, the children will be learning about plants, animals and environmental changes.  They will also be visiting the different animal groups during a visit to Knowsley Safari Park; details will be given out nearer the time.  In Geography, we will be locating the countries and capital cities of Europe and North and South Africa.

It is beneficial for children to read as regularly as possible.  I would ask that the children aim to read at least twice a week to an adult and at least 3 times a week independently.  The reading books the children bring home help to practise their reading skills and build self-confidence; their reading is then challenged and developed during weekly guided reading sessions.  Where possible, please try to question your child on what they have just read to check their understanding of the text – there are examples of reading questions in the children’s planners.

Your child will continue to work in either mixed or set Maths groups.  If you have any questions regarding your child’s maths work then please don’t hesitate to pop in and either speak to me or arrange an appointment to speak to your child’s Maths teacher.

Homework will continue to be given out on a weekly basis alternating between Literacy and Maths. This will be given out on Friday to be returned the following Wednesday. There may also be some additional homework set throughout the year for Topic or Science. Spelling related homework will also be sent home on a weekly basis.

Planners need to be kept up to date. Children will spend some time at the end of the week reflecting on what they have achieved, setting new targets for the following week and completing these sections in the planners.  I would ask that planners and reading books are in school every day and signed by an adult once a week. This is a vital skill to develop both home school communications, as well as in developing independence and organisation.

We have two assigned P.E times: Tuesday am and Wednesday pm. Can you please ensure that PE kits are in school on a Monday morning and remain in school until Friday.

If you have any questions or problems please do not hesitate to contact me.

Many thanks for your continued support.

Kind regards

Mr Shaw
