Summer Term 2017

Hello and welcome back to school, I hope you have had a lovely Easter holiday and are ready for our final term in year 2!

SATS

Year 2 statutory assessments will take place over two weeks in May (wb 8.5.17 and wb 15.5.17). The children will be completing two maths papers (arithmetic and reasoning), two reading papers and two non-statutory SPAG papers (spelling and grammar). There is no formal written paper as the children will be assessed against a range of writing produced in class. They will take place as informally as possible, in the classroom. If you have any questions regarding the SATS, please come and see me.

Creative Curriculum

As we enter our final term in year 2, we will explore a new topic called’ ‘The Seaside’. The children will experience lots of fun activities! We intend to have a ‘summer fun day’ as a finale to close the topic at the end of the year and hopefully the weather will be on our side too!

During the first half term we will be reading ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’. We will focus on history and enhance our skills in this area of the curriculum by observing how Seaside holidays have changed over the years. Our Science for the first half term will be about ‘The Seasons’ and the changes that happen during each season.

In our second half term, we will be continuing with our ‘Seaside topic. We will be exploring Design and Technology and Art. Our Science will be extended into this term and we will focus on Habitats. We will also look at coastlines and human and physical features in our Geography work.

Within this term, you will receive a final report for your child. There will also be a parent meeting where you will have the opportunity to discuss the report along with any messages to be forwarded to your child’s next class teacher. There is a week set aside for transition, where your child will meet their new class teacher and they will work in their new classroom, hopefully familiarising themselves a little before they start the new year in September.

Burwardsley

We are looking forward to our fantastic trip to Burwardsley. We are going on Tuesday 20th June and returning to school on Wednesday 21th June. On the day you will need to bring a packed lunch to school, in a disposable bag. Kit lists will be given out again nearer the time. Please pack your child’s case with them so that they know what they are taking. How exciting this trip will be!

 

Water Bottles

Please ensure your child brings a water bottle into school, especially as the weather is getting warmer. They are available for the children to access throughout the day. Please note we only encourage water and not juice.

Homework

Homework will continue to go home on a Wednesday and should be returned by the following Monday. It will be alternated between Maths and Literacy.

Reading

Children will be encouraged to change their own reading book when they have confidently finished it. Your child is required to read from the school reading scheme regularly and are encouraged to read as much as possible as this is vital in improving both their reading and writing skills. Please make sure you record when your child has read in your child’s planner. These records can also include any other books your child is reading at home (both fiction and non-fiction), as this allows me to keep track of how much and what they are reading. Our new home reading incentive should help to enthuse your child to read at least three times a week!

P.E

PE is planned for Tuesday and Thursday and will be taken by Mr Sutton and myself. However, there may be other opportunities for P.E throughout the week. Therefore, it is important that children have their kit with them each day. They will be sent home half termly or if they get particularly muddy!

Class Teddy

This year, our class has a big responsibility in looking after ‘Fluffy’. Each night a child will be selected to take ‘Fluffy’ home and complete a short diary to tell the class what he has got up to. You may wish to help your child write this diary and include any pictures or drawings to show what he has done whilst with your child.

Helpers

We are always on the lookout for parent helpers so if you would like to get involved please contact a member of staff. Any help big or small is greatly appreciated.
